Why You Should Use Green Energy

By Carl Ziebarth

The world has relied on fossil fuels for a long time. Fossil fuels are used to heat our homes, gas our cars, and provide electricity. We are starting to see the consequences of habitual fossil fuel use. Resources are becoming depleted and slowly our planet is dying.

But why green energy sources? Well because there are advantages to using them which we will never be able to get if we dont change our ways. This is also even if some will argue that the problem with green energy is that it is sometimes difficult to generate the power we need. While that may be true, that is why there are other green energy sources available and we just to know which ones are viable given the geographic location.

The various green energy sources such as solar, wind, wave, hydropower and geothermal do not produce anything harmful which may have a negative effect on the environment. This is the exact opposite of what you get when you continue to operate a coal or nuclear power plant.

Fossil fuels release harmful carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Individually, a coal plant may not produce a large amount of carbon dioxide. Our world currently has 50,000 coal plants. Cumulatively, that is an enormous amount of carbon dioxide. We must reverse this trend before it is too later. We must cultivate sources of green energy.

Nuclear power appears to be a viable solution. Nuclear power produces the necessary energy. Nuclear power brings with it it's own set of issues. While producing energy, nuclear power produces spent fuel rods. These rods have to go somewhere. How many mountains or holes can we fill with spent fuel rods? Then there are nuclear accidents. True, there has not been one for years. Do you want to be your children's lives there will never be another one?

Every fuel source requires maintenance, including green energy. All energy production sources have maintenance costs. Ethanol production still requires corn to be refined at a refinery. Windmills are mechanical machines. They have parts that must be maintained. Even with these maintenance costs, green energy is still more attractive than fossil fuels.

The next advantage of using green energy sources is that we will never run out of them. For centuries, the Sun's rays have reached so has the wind which is blown from the sea. By using it, we decrease our dependence on oil which is a nonrenewable resource.

Every American has a choice. We can continue to increase our appetite for fossil fuels or we can pursue renewable energy sources. Our governments are only giving lip service to green energy. They hold summits and conferences on global climate change. They tell us we have to reduce our use of fossil fuels but do not offer any alternatives.

Awareness does not always mean change. Daily we are told that global climate change is here. People are told what they should do. Yet, not even the government is building wind mills or erecting solar panels. Who will lead by example?

Green energy is a viable alternative to fossil fuels. While there are maintenance costs, green energy is renewable. We are past due for action, rather than talk. You have the power in your hands. It is possible to have home made energy. You just have to decide whether you want to commit or continue to spew toxins into the environment. - 31812
